Free Tax Preparation and the EITC:

 

 

Was your household income $58,000 or less in 2009?

You may qualify for free tax preparation services!

  • If you earned up to $50,000, you may be eligible for free tax preparation services at a Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA) site near you.
    • Free tax preparation services will be available through April 15.
    • Trained volunteers will determine if you are eligible for refunds and credits including the Earned Income Tax Credit.
    • Dial 2-1-1 to find a site near you.
  • If you earned up to $58,000, you can file your taxes for free online at www.myfreetaxes.com/unitedwayinc.

 

 

What is the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)?

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal income tax credit for working individuals and families with modest incomes. It is the federal government's largest benefits program for working families. More than $49 billion in EITC was returned to working families in 2008. To learn more about the EITC, click here.

  • You could receive a credit of up to :
    • $5,657 with three or more qualifying children
    • $5,028 with two qualifying children
    • $3,043 with one qualifying child
    • $457 with no qualifying children
  • Do I qualify for the EITC? To qualify for the EITC, you must meet certain requirements and you must file a tax return, even if you made very little money this year.
    • To qualify for the EITC, earned income and adjusted gross income (AGI) must each be less than:
      • $43,279 ($48,279 married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children
      • $40,295 ($45,295 married filing jointly) with two qualifying children
      • $35,463 ($40,463 married filing jointly) with one qualifying child
      • $13,440 ($18,440 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children
