U.S. Soccer FoundationAnnounces 2006 Grant Program

(Deadline: September 30, 2005; http://www.ussoccerfoundation.org/)

The 2006 grant cycle will be focusing on: Proposals that develop players, referees, and coaches through programs field enhancements, or the foundation’s All Conditions Fields Program, with special emphasis on the economically disadvantaged in urban areas. The foundation’s grant program is open to anyone with a soccer-specific program or project that benefits a not-for-profit purpose and meets the established focus.

American Library Association and Scholastic Library PublishingNational Library Week Grant

(Deadline: October 17, 2005; http://www.ala.org/ala/pio/campaign/nlw/nlwgrant.htm)

All libraries are eligible to apply for the grant, which will be awarded to a single library for the best public awareness campaign incorporating the official theme, “Change Your World @ your library,” during National Library Week (April 2-8, 2006). Funds are to be used to support the winner’s National Library Week promotional activities as outlined in the application and cannot be use for capital expenses.

Aetna Foundation Holiday Grants

Grants will range from $500 to $3,000 and will benefit human service programs in the Hartford and Middletown areas that serve the basic human physical and emotional needs during the holiday season. Organizations must apply electronically beginning September 7, 2005.

Women’s Sports FoundationGoGirlGo! Sports and Educational Program

(Deadline: November 30, 2005; http://www.womensportsfoundation.org/)

GoGirlGo! is dedicated to the development and funding of girls’ sports/physical activity programs that combine athletic instruction with educational information aimed at reducing risk behaviors that threaten the health and social advancement of girls in third to eighth grade. The program provides financial assistance to sports and physical activity programs for an underserved population with high incidences of health-risk behaviors. Applicants must meet certain requirements, including a commitment to implement the GoGirlGo! educational curriculum, including completion of a post-project attitudinal survey. The GoGirlGo! curriculum may be implemented following receipt of a grant.

American Association of University Women Educational Foundation

Community Action Grants

(Deadline: January 15, 2006; http://www.aauw.org/fga/fellowships_grants/community_action.cfm)

One-year ($2,000-$7,000) and two-year ($5,000-$10,000) grants are available for innovative programs that address community needs and develop girls’ sense of efficacy through leadership or advocacy opportunities. Topic areas are unrestricted but should include a clearly defined activity that promotes education and equity for women and girls. Applicants must be women who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Green Communities InitiativeCommunity Improvement/Development

The initiative will offer financing, grants, and technical assistance to developers to build affordable housing that promotes health, conserves energy and natural resources, and provides easy access to jobs, schools, and services. Grant amounts range between $15,000 and $50,000. The competition is open to 501©(3) nonprofit, public housing authorities and tribally designated housing entities. For-profit entities may participate through joint ventures with qualified organizations.

These awards honor young people in middle and high school grades for outstanding volunteer service to their communities. Applicants must be individuals enrolled in grades 5-12 and must have engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred, at least in part, during the twelve months prior to the date of application.

Enterprise FoundationRose Architectural Fellowship for 2006

This fellowship promotes architectural and community design in low-income neighborhoods with a focus on improving the quality of life through design that promotes human interaction. Applicants submit project proposals created in partnership with nonprofit, community development organizations. Selected fellows live/work in communities for three years to complete full-scale projects that include design, building and/or rehabilitation. Each fellow receives guidance and support from local professionals and a $40,000 annual stipend, and benefits (including healthcare).

Best Practices in Running Your Nonprofit

This 2-part workshop focuses on what nonprofit board members and executive directors need to know to perform their duties in compliance with today’s legal standards and organizational best practices. Part 1 will focus on the structure and organization of the nonprofit; Part 2 will focus on governance in operation.

Overview of Employment Law

( September 28, 2005; 10:00am – 12:00 pm)

This program is designed for Executive Directors, staff managers and others interested in employment law. The focus will be on the fundamentals of the employment relationship: how to properly hire, fire, evaluate and discipline employees as well as other policies and laws concerning employees.

According to the new regulations an organization’s charitable registration will be valid for only one year, requiring annual renewals and late fees if not completed in a timely manner. FDIC Consumer News Guide to Money Management for Young Adults

This particular publication offers practical guidance on financial matters and is specifically designed to help young adults learn the right ways to save and manage money. LenscraftersGift of Sight Program

This program provides free eye care and glasses to low-income children and adults who have no insurance. The child/adult must bring to Lenscrafters a letter of reference stating that they are in need. The letter must be on the letterhead of a school, government agency, faith based or non-profit agency and the referring agency’s tax ID# must be on the letter.
