What Your Gift Provides Some people may wonder what a weekly donation through the United Way Community Campaign will buy. Here are some examples of how life’s little pleasures translate into community investments that show results: $1 buys one bottle of water OR covers the cost of three children's vision screening and could save their sight. $2 buys a coffee and a pastry OR provides families with seven hours of respite care, to alleviate the stress of caring for an ill or disabled family member. $4 buys one ice cream sundae OR provides 20 trips for elderly or disabled individuals to medical appointments. $5 buys lunch for one person at a fast food restaurant OR 1,000 pounds of food to feed those who frequent local soup kitchens and emergency food pantries $10 buys two video rentals OR enrolls two at-risk children in a homework and tutorial program with positive role models who work to help them pass to the next grade. $12 buys one pizza OR provides training for three police officers in Safe Return, a program that teaches them how to identify a person with Alzheimer's disease and return him/her safely to his/her family. $15 buys two movie tickets OR helps 76 low-income individuals receive training to improve financial management skills because they want to own their own home or business. $20 buys a bouquet of flowers OR provides 14 weeks of services proven to reduce the incidence of child abuse in at-risk families, including home visits for first-time parents.
